A father-son relationship can be incredibly complicated, and no one on NCIS knows that better than Timothy McGee. We’ve seen the agent (Sean Murray) and his now-deceased dad’s strained dynamic before, but on the episode called, “Once Upon a Tim,” we’ll dive even deeper into their rocky past.

“Once Upon a Tim” brings viewers back to a high school-aged McGee (Charles Tyler Kinder), and his clashes with his highly decorated Navy Admiral dad, John McGee (Matthew Glave). “We see that a young McGee is getting pressured quite a bit by his father, you know, the Navy man, who’s pretty strict—very strict,” Sean exclusively tells CountryLiving.com.

The effects of this tense past extend much further than McGee’s teen years, too. The actor admits that the experience can sometimes alter how adult McGee sees his own career.

“McGee questions that a little bit, even today,” Sean says. “‘Cause his job is related to the Navy, [but] he’s not quite sure whether he is a Navy man, so to speak.”

Those awkward moments aside, the episode will also shed light on another of McGee’s past relationships—and let’s just say this one much friendlier. “[Viewers will] get to meet McGee’s first female semi-girlfriend in high school, which is fun,” Sean says.

People will also be pleased to see a familiar face return to their small screens: McGee’s wife, Delilah Fielding, played by Margo Harshman, who Sean calls one of his “favorites.”

Regardless of how Sean feels for Margo, it sounds like McGee is putting Delilah through the ringer. The actor spilled that his TV wife will also find out things about her husband—and their home—that she wasn’t aware of before.

“She knows there’s been some deaths in the apartment, but she gets to learn a little bit about some of the other stuff that she doesn’t know about,” Sean says. (Loyal viewers will remember the grim scene on “What Lies Above” during season 14, when Delilah was horrified to find out a 15-year-old mummy had been stored beneath the floorboards in the couple’s bedroom.)

This evening will be major for McGee—and you won’t want to miss a moment. Travel back in time on “Once Upon a Tim,” tonight at 8 p.m. EST on CBS.
