A Don Quixote Time Capsule
An 1834 time capsule was discovered in 2009 under a statue of Miguel de Cervantes in Madrid. It contains a guide and four volumes of the 1819 edition of Don Quixote. It was an exciting discovery for the historians as well as literature buffs.
The 175-year-old capsule contained five copies of Don Quixote published in 1819, a newspaper from 1834 wrapped around a calendar, a Madrid guide for visitors, some portraits of important people at the time, and a manuscript covered in cloth. Madrid must have liked the finding, because it decided to plant another capsule under the same statue so future civilizations could read “Don Quixote” five times in a row.
